How to improve your Google ranking, the seven levers
Ranking is not a mystery; it is a stack of specific jobs most local rivals have not done. In priority order, plain English.
The seven levers
- 1. One page per service. A page called "Boiler repairs in Walsall" can rank for boiler repairs in Walsall; a homepage listing nine services can rank for almost none of them. This is the single most common gap we find.
- 2. Say your town where Google reads. Your homepage title and main heading should name what you do and where. It sounds obvious; most sites we scan never mention their town in either.
- 3. A live Google Business Profile. Claimed, exact details matching your website, photos this year, posts this month. For local searches the map pack often sits above everything.
- 4. Reviews, steadily. Quantity, recency and replies all count, for ranking and for the click after it. One a week beats twenty in January.
- 5. Consistent details everywhere. The same name, address and phone on every directory. Mixed details make Google unsure it is the same business, and unsure businesses rank lower.
- 6. Answer real questions. Pages that answer what customers actually ask (cost, how long, what is included) win long-tail searches and increasingly get quoted by AI assistants.
- 7. Speed and mobile basics. A slow page on a phone loses the visitor before it ranks. Fix the worst offenders; perfection is not required.
What NOT to do: buy links, exchange links at scale, or bulk-publish AI articles unreviewed. All three now sit inside Google’s published spam policies, and recovery is slow.
The order matters
Do them top to bottom. Levers one to three usually show movement inside a month for local searches; four and five compound forever; six is where growth comes from once the basics stand.

How can I improve my Google ranking quickly?
The fastest movers are usually a page per service (most sites bury everything on one page), your town named in your homepage title, and an active Google Business Profile. Weeks, not days, and compounding from there.
Why is my business not ranking on Google?
Almost always one of three: no page targets the search you want, your site never names your town, or your Google listing is unclaimed or inconsistent with your website. All three are checkable in the free Dhucha scan.
Do I need backlinks to rank locally?
Less than you have been told. For local searches, service pages, your Google listing, reviews and consistent listings do most of the work. Real links help; bought or exchanged links are a policy risk that can cost you everything.
