How to get Google reviews, a system that actually works
Reviews decide who gets the call. Not slowly, either: most people read fewer than five reviews before choosing, and recency matters as much as the score. Here is the system, the exact words, and the rules that keep you safe.
Why a system beats asking when you remember
The businesses with hundreds of reviews are not luckier; they ask every time, the same way, at the same moment. One review a week is fifty two a year, which outranks almost every local rival on momentum alone.
Recency is a signal in its own right. A newest review from eight months ago quietly tells Google, and customers, that the flow stopped.
The system, four steps
- Get your link. In your Google Business Profile, use the "Ask for reviews" button to copy your direct review link. Shorten it once, keep it everywhere: phone notes, van, invoices.
- Pick the moment. The ask works at the peak: the boiler fixed, the hair done, the invoice marked paid with a thank you. Build it into that step, not into a monthly memory.
- Use the words. "Thanks again for the kind words. Would you mind putting that in a quick Google review? It genuinely helps a small business like ours. Here is the link." Sent as a text or WhatsApp, with the link, within an hour.
- Reply to every review. Two sentences, name the specific job, thank them. Replies are read by the NEXT customer and are a ranking signal of an active business.
What Google bans, and it matters
No incentives (discounts, prizes, freebies for reviews), no review gating (only asking happy customers via a filter tool), no bulk asking from one device or location, and never fake or family-authored reviews. Google removes reviews and can suspend listings for all of these. The safe system above needs none of them.
Handling the bad one
One calm, factual reply, written for the readers rather than the reviewer: acknowledge, state your side briefly, offer to resolve offline. A 4.7 with a well-handled complaint converts better than a suspicious 5.0.

How do I ask a customer for a Google review?
At the moment of a thank you, in person or by message, with the direct review link. One sentence works: "Would you mind leaving us a quick Google review? It genuinely helps a small business like ours. Here is the link." Sending the link is the step most businesses miss.
Can I offer a discount for Google reviews?
No. Google’s policies prohibit incentivised reviews, and enforcement can remove all your reviews at once. Ask well and consistently instead; that is entirely allowed and it compounds.
Do Google reviews help ranking?
Yes, review quantity, recency and your replies all feed local ranking, and more importantly they decide who gets the call once you are seen. A steady flow beats a one-off burst on both counts.
